Everything is Horrible' (2008)
combines items that are familiar to the viewer with those manipulated by
the artist. Intended to be an artwork with a "punch line", there are two
factors that shape the outcome of how the images are observed: The first
is what the viewer expects to see, and the second is what they
unexpectedly discover. This second factor influences the way every item
within the photograph is examined. The entire image becomes scrutinised
and the innocence of expectation can only return with a new viewer.
'Everything is Horrible'
was exhibited in the COFA Annual 2008 and was awarded the Australia Centre for Photography Prize.
It shares its title with a 2011 solo show featuring work from 2008 to 2011.
